large-bean Maragogype from El Salvador, Sweet notes of buttery caramels, unrefined sugar cane, and corn syrup, with accents of red apple, and pear.

The Maragogype cultivar is a natural mutation of Typica, and is known for its large beans, and very good cup quality. While Typica originated in Ethiopia, Maragogype was first discovered in the Brazilian city of Maragogipe in the late 1800's. That's where the story of this specific coffee Maragogype starts, too. This coffee comes from a farm called Finca La Antonieta, near the Chaparrastique volcano in San Miguel, at 1450 meters above sea level. Originally planted in Bourbon, Rene Pascal, an agronomist at the farm, brought back Maragogype seeds after being introduced to the unusual coffee mutation on a trip to Brazil 25 years ago. Since that time, he and longtime farm manager Ovidio Cortez, continued to propagate Maragogype throughout Antonieta, covering 50 of the 170 hectare estate! That's no small feat when you consider that Maragogype requires a lot of care and attention to produce well since it doesn't have the disease resistence of many other types, and is generally a low-production cultivar.
